DONA MAE M. KUENNING age 85

of New Bremen, OH, died on Monday, February 16, 2015 at 6:05 P.M. at the Elmwood Assisted Living of New Bremen. She was born on December 12, 1929 in New Bremen the daughter, and only child of the late Harold and Alfa Mae (Coble) Speckman. On October 2, 1948 she married Stanley A. Kuenning who survives in New Bremen. Also surviving are their sons, Tim & Marilyn Kuenning and Scott & Linda Kuenning, both of New Bremen, seven grandsons Mack & Jill, Luke & Amanda, Greg & Heather, Lee & Kendra, Andrew & Lindsey, Rob & Jackie, and Jeffery & Kelsey, fourteen great-grandchildren Kole, Reece, Nolan, Halle, Reid, Josie, Jack, Sam, Summer, Gwen, Addison, Spencer, Julia, and Mason, in-laws Frank & Jeanne Kuenning of New Bremen and JoAlice & Jim Nieter of Sun City, FL.

Dona Mae was a life-long and active member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen. For many years she was a Sunday school teacher, and superintendent, an Elder of the church, sang in the church choir, and occasionally played the organ. She was active the New Bremen Local Schools where she was involved with the PTA, putting on several plays and musicals, and was the first female elected to the New Bremen School Board of Education in 1968. She worked at the former STAMCO of New Bremen for several years, and played on the STAMCO girls' softball team. In 1953, Stanley and Dona Mae bought the Western Ohio Hardware, and she helped to run the store for many years. She specialized in mixing paints and keeping the store neat and tidy. In 1955, she was awarded Ohio Hardware Woman of the Year. She was the New Bremen Village Treasurer for a number of years, was a member of the New Bremen OCCL, the St. Marys Soroptimist Club, a member of several card circles, loved music, and was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Paul United Church of Christ with the Rev. Becky Erb Strang officiating. Burial will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery of New Bremen. Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 20, 2015 from 3:00 until 8:00 PM at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen, and one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Paul U.C.C. Window Restoration Fund, or the New Bremen Historic Association. Condolences to the Kuenning family may be left at gilberghartwigfh.com.
